Cancer is a disease which statistically 1/3 of the population at least once in the lifetime gets confronted with. Coping with cancer is a very complex and chronical process, which can be under some circumstances life-long. In the scope of dolphin assisted therapy recently not only people with disabilities or psychological disorders have been seeking improvements for their lives, it turned out that also cancer patients can be supported in the course of a complementary treatment with dolphins, which appears in many respect a supportive factor in the complex of a cancer treatment.
Dolphintherapy can unfold effectiveness in at least two ways. On one hand meeting dolphins can be key experience, which may help to align the patient in a new and constructive way towards life, on the other hand dolphins induce a psychological and neurological harmonization effect, which stimulates via the parasympathical nervous system also the immune-system. Hence the dolphin-experience helps cancer patients to alter the focus and self-definition from the disease at bit more onto the here and now. This leads in many cases to increased life motivation, trust and control and helps to maintain meaning in life beyond the illness. Similar to diverse therapeutic disciplines in classic psycho-oncology, the dolphin assisted psycho-oncology contributes a supportive role during the cancer treatment, as well as a relapse-prevention for those ones who have survived the actual disease.
